The Department of Economics is one of the earliest full-fledged Under
Graduate departments of The Madurai Diraviyam Thayumanavar Hindu College
was started in 1936. The Department is one of the pioneering
departments to introduce B.A. Economics in Tamil Medium besides English
Medium. The Department was elevated as Post Graduate Department in 1978
with application and research as its thrust areas. By recognizing its
academic excellence, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University granted the
status of Research Center to the Department in 2010.
